What is EUBO?

The European Union Baroque Orchestra is unique: EUBO nurtures and supports young baroque music performers through the challenging transition between conservatoire study and the music profession. Since its foundation in 1985 EUBO has auditioned and selected new personnel from all over the EU to create a completely new orchestra every year. EUBO's annual programme equips talented young musicians with a portfolio of skills, specialist networks and the necessary experience to launch their careers. Each "EUBO’s" ephemeral existence makes its concerts special: live performances throughout the EU, under the finest musical directors, enjoying all the technical accomplishment of the best young baroque musicians in Europe, allied to an infectious undimmed sense of discovery and enjoyment.

“Flying the flag for Europe, EUBO is”, as former EC President José Manuel Barroso says, “a perfect symbol of the power of integration, a subtle and potent instrument of harmonisation between people and nations.” Supported by the EU until 2013 with an Operating Grant, EUBO’s role as Cultural Ambassador for the European Union is affirmed in perpetuity. And to meet new challenges, EUBO has joined forces with nine European Partners to present a 4-year project 'EUBO Mobile Baroque Academy' with funding from the Creative Europe programme. EMBA will build bridges between students and the profession, redress geographical disparities, enhance performer-audience relationships and harness the potential of digital technologies, without losing sight of its unique role in sustaining our common cultural heritage. • ”Rarely have I seen so much smiling communication and listening between musicians on a concert stage. As a result, EUBO's concert was a delicate, joyous gem. Talent oozed from the stage. "

    Hugo Shirley, The Daily Telegraph

  • “An orchestra is the perfect symbol of the power of integration, and EUBO is a perfect example of what this can mean for Europe. Bringing together talent of different backgrounds, nationalities and languages, it serves as a reminder of what we can achieve by working together.”

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission

  • "EUBO has greatly contributed to the vitality of European baroque ensembles."

    Mrs Androulla Vassiliou,

Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth

  • “It is testimony to the quality of EUBO and its Danish director: Mortensen’s command of the idiom is second to none.”

    Andrew Clark, The Financial Times
